C.S. Lewis and Liturgy

I believe—and it has been my experience—that ongoing participation in the liturgy is ongoing participation in the life of God and, as such, will lead, as C.S. Lewis envisions human transformation, to a life “dazzling, radiant . . . pulsating all through with . . . energy, joy, and wisdom and love as we cannot now imagine.”
I came across the above quote from C.S. Lewis as I read the introduction to a new book that I just learned about today: Beyond Smells and Bells: The Wonder and Power of Christian Liturgy, Mark Galli, p. 12. I have made the title a live link, so that if you are interested in reading a bit more, you can go to a twenty page excerpt by clicking the link.

See you Sunday!

Jim,
Thanks for posting some of the "Beyond Smells & Bells". It was nice to read someone affirming that "I am shaped by the participation in the liturgy every week, year after year." I would hope so...and in a positive way. The comments about young people and why they lean toward anglican and liturgical churches makes so much sense to me. I don't know why we don't have MORE young Episcopalians?? or for that matter MORE parishoners period!??
You also triggered my curiosity about the "Shot heard around the world" by including the first page of the next chapter...so typical of a "teacher". :)
Blessings,
Linda

This in from Patti via email:

Jim, Good reading. I'd like to read this book. I'll appreciate the litergy Sunday more than ever after reading just what I've read so far. It takes it way beyond just something we do week after week and gives it much more meaning.

At lunch the other day I said something about the lessons of the day and the sermon and 3 different people got all excited because they had the same readings. 2 are Catholic and one is Methodist. We talked about that for awhile. It was really refreshing and fun to compare notes. The Story. I'll have to get my hands on this book. I do think I'm attached to the litergy and maybe haven't understood why. Thank you very much for sharing this.

Have a great evening. Patti.
